How to set up Wi-Fi on the Motorola DEXT
Setting up and using Wi-Fi on the Motorola DEXT Android-powered, Qwerty keyboard-packing smartphone
The Motorola DEXT is very well equipped for online activities and messaging, propelled by HSDPA high-speed mobile data and Wi-Fi connectivity.
Running on the Android smartphone operating system, the DEXT is geared up for social media, with its MOTOBLUR user interface providing a selection of onscreen panels for updates and easy connectivity to popular social networking and content sharing services.
The Motorola DEXT's Wi-Fi connectivity means that you can get high-speed data connections on home Wi-Fi hubs, via office Wireless LANs or through public Wi-Fi hotspots. While the DEXT also delivers speedy mobile network data access, Wi-Fi offers the potential for low-cost high-speed online browsing, downloading, streaming and uploading.
It's easy to set up and use, too - here we explain how...
Switching on and connecting to Wi-Fi
- Press the menu button under the display (bottom left, marked with four squares).
- A menu appears. Press Settings.
- In the Settings menu, press Wireless Controls.
- In the Wireless Controls Menu, press Wi-Fi to switch it on.
- In a few moments, a tick appears in the box, indicating that Wi-Fi has been switched on.
- To connect to a Wi-Fi network, in the Wireless Controls menu (Step 3), press Wi-Fi Settings. The DEXT detects Wi-Fi networks within range and displays them in a list onscreen. Press the one to which you want to connect. If it is an open network, you will be immediately connected.
- If you are connecting to a secure Wi-Fi connection, you are prompted to input a wireless password. This is the password or code set up by the W-Fi network administrator. If it is a home Wi-Fi hub, this will have been set by you or the person who set up the Wi-Fi network, but if it is an office or public hotspot, you may have to get the password from the adminstrator or service provider.
- Type the password into the Wireless Password panel. You can use the slide-out Qwerty keyboard or press the panel to bring up the onscreen touchscreen keypad.
- When you've typed in the password, press Connect.
- The phone will connect to the Wi-Fi network, and you can launch the browser or use any of the Motorola DEXT's online services via this Wi-Fi connection. The DEXT will remember the settings when you go out of range of the Wi-Fi network, so you can automatically connect to it again when you come back within range.
Wi-Fi on/off shortcut
To conserve battery power, you may want to switch Wi-Fi off when you're not using it. The Motorola DEXT has a shortcut for switching Wi-Fi on or off.
- Press and hold the Power/Sleep button on the side of the phone. A menu appears. Press Wi-Fi to turn Wi-Fi on or off
Finding the Motorola DEXT's MAC address
If you're connecting to a Wi-Fi network that requires pre-authorisation before connection (even with the correct pre-shared key), you may require the phone's MAC address. This is a 12-character address that the administrator of the network may need to pre-authorise your phone to connect. It may be automatically detected when you try to sign onto the network.
- To get the Motorola DEXT's MAC address, go to the Wi-Fi Settings menu (Step 6). Press the Menu button (under the display). When the menu pops up Press Advanced.
- Here you'll find the Motorola DEXT's MAC address - a 12-charcacter code. Input this into the appropriate place in the Wi-Fi router access set up procedure.
