How to use Android Market on the Motorola DEXT

The Motorola DEXT is an Android-powered smartphone that's capable of running some powerful features and applications. It comes equipped with Wi-Fi, HSDPA high-speed mobile connectivity, A-GPS location finding gadgetry, a slide-out Qwerty keyboard, a 5-megapixel camera and other multimedia goodies.

But you can add much more to the out-of-the-box specification by downloading applications from Android Market - the store that offers tens of thousands of applications, some free and others paid for. Once you're connected, you can browse as much as you like and choose to download apps.

You are limited to how many apps you can insall by the amount of storage on the DEXT (as currently you can't store Android apps on memory cards). However, there's plenty of apps to choose from.

We show you how to set up and access Android Market from the Motorola DEXT.

Signing up to Android Market

1. If you have a Market shortcut icon pre-installed on the home screen, press that to get straight to Android Market.
2. Alternatively, from the home screen, you can press the Menu button under the display (in the centre) or the Menu button on the bottom of the screen (centre). The Main Menu opens up. Scroll down to the Market icon. Press to select.
3. You are then normally taken straight into Android Market. However, the first time you use the Android Market application, if you have not done so already, the application requires you to link your Google account to your Motorola DEXT. This will also enable you to sync contacts, calendar and other applications with your online Google account. Press Next to continue.
4. You can choose whether to sign in with an existing Google account or create a new one. Press the option you require.
5. Sign in by typing in the appropriate details, using the slide-out keyboard (or, if you prefer, press the panels onscreen to use soft keyboard option). Press Sign In.
6. You are presented with Terms of Service for Android Market. Press Accept.
7. You are taken into Android Market with a list of options you can browse.

Using Android Market to find and install applications

1. In the Android Market home screen, you can press the featured items on the top line to get more information and the option to buy or install them.
2. Alternatively, press Applications or Games from the homescreen to open the list up, or press the Search option to hunt for apps by name or description.
3. Press further sub categories as you browse for apps.
4. Press the name of any application you want to select.Press the Back button under the display to go back to a previous menu.
5. Once you've selected an application and viewed its detals, if you want to download it, press Install or Buy.
6. More information is presented and if necessary you may have to agree to certain conditions before installing.
7. The application downloads in the background and the menu confirms when it has been downloaded.
8. You can also search for applications or view only free apps. You can select the Search option from the Android Market home screen (Using: Step 2). Alternatively, within the menus, press the Menu button under the display and a menu of options appears. Press Search.
9. A search panel appears at the top of the display. Type in the term you wish to search for and press the magnifying glass icon.
10. In a few moments, a list of apps appears. Press the one you want.
11. You can now see details of the application with an option to install it.

• In the pop up Menu option (Using: Step 8), if you press the Change View option, you get a selection of options for how the apps are presented. Tap the one you want to select.
• Any apps that you have downloaded will now be available in the Motorola DEXT's Main Menu.
