How to set up and use Wi-Fi on the Motorola Milestone
Setting up and using Wi-Fi on the Motorola Milestone for home hubs, office Wireless LANs and public Wi-Fi hotspots
The Motorola Milestone is a well connected smartphone, with HSPA high-speed 3G data and Wi-Fi connectivity built in. This Android powered device is great for online action, whether it's browsing, downloading, streaming or social networking.
Setting up and using Wi-Fi on the Motorola Milestone is straightforward to do, and enables you to connect to home Wi-Fi hubs, office Wi-Fi networks or public Wi-Fi hotspots. It just takes a few presses to set up Wi-Fi on the Milestone. With settings stored, you can automatically connect to the regular Wi-Fi networks you use whenever you're in range.
Here's how to set it up...
Switching on Wi-Fi
- Press the App Tray bar at the bottom of the display to bring up the main applications menu.
- In the main menu, press Settings.
- Alternatively, press the Menu key under the display (second from left, marked with four horizontal lines). A menu appears onscreen. Press Settings.
- In the Settings menu, press Wireless & Networks.
- In the Wireless & Network Settings menu, press Wi-Fi to turn it on.
- In a few moments, a tick appears in the box, indicating that Wi-Fi has been turned on.
Setting up a Wi-Fi connection

The Motorola Milestone automatically searches for nearby Wi-Fi networks within range and displays a list of networks it detects onscreen. Press the name of the network to which you want to connect. If the network is open, with no security passcode required, you will be immediately connected.
- If you are connecting to a secure Wi-Fi network, you are prompted to input a Wireless Password. This is the password or code set up by the W-Fi network administrator. If it is a home Wi-Fi hub, this will have been set by you or the person who set up the Wi-Fi network, but if it is an office or public hotspot, you may have to get the password from the adminstrator or service provider.
- Using the Milestone's slide-out keyboard (or by pressing the password panel and using the soft touchscreen keyboard), type the password into the Wireless Password panel. Press Connect.
- Your Motorola Milestone will be connected to the Wi-Fi network.
- You can launch the browser or use any other online services via this Wi-Fi connection. Settings are stored, so whenever you are in range of the Wi-Fi network, you can automatically connect to it without having to search and register.
- To conserve the Milestone's battery power, you may want to turn off Wi-Fi when you're not using it. Follow the procedures from Step 1 to Step 4. By pressing Wi-Fi you can turn it off.
Finding the Motorola Milestone's MAC address
If you're connecting to a Wi-Fi network that requires pre-authorisation before connection (even with the correct Wireless Password), you may require the phone's MAC address. This is a 12-character address that the administrator of the network may require to pre-authorise devices to connect to the network. It may be automatically detected when you try to sign onto the network.
- To get the Motorola Milestone's MAC address, go to the Wi-Fi Settings menu (Switching on: Step 3 or 6). Press the Menu key (under the display). Press Advanced.
- Here you'll find the Motorola Milestone's MAC address - a 12-charcacter code. Input this into the appropriate field in the Wi-Fi router access set up procedure.
