Premiership football comes to the iPhone
Richard Goodwin
Global Pay-TV behemoth BSkyB has announced that it will show live Premier League matches on Apple’s iPhone.
iPhone football-fanatics can now watch live games on a new Sky Sports app that lets users watch matches on either Sky Sports or ESPN over a WiFi connection for £6 per month.
However, if football’s not your thing, there is also the option to watch cricket and golf via the new application.
The new Sky Sports app comes as part of BSkyB’s recent campaign of applications targeted at mobile users as the company attempts to expand its reach into the mobile markets.
The Sky Sports application is significantly cheaper than its TV counterpart at £6 per month - Sky charges £26.50 a month for Sky Sports 1 or 2, or £35 for the whole package bar ESPN.
“In less than a year we’ve already seen millions of downloads of Sky’s Apps from the App Store. Our new Sky Mobile TV App combines the demand for great live TV on the move with the high quality viewing experience offered by iPhone and iPod touch,” said David Gibbs, Sky's mobile general manager.
He added: “Sky Mobile TV offers more choice, control and flexibility for customers ensuring they can access the content they want, at a time that’s convenient to them, on the screen of their choosing.”
According to a BBC report, Sky has claimed that there has been two million downloads of Sky apps on the iPhone so far.
