Real Men use Droid! - the most macho smartphone ever.

Paul Nesbitt

'If you want to be a real man, buy a Motorola Droid! The world's first "Robot Phone" is a "Bare-knuckle bucket of does", which can "run apps with axle-greased ease", unlike the Liberace-styled handbag accessories that are its rivals.'

At least, that's the message behind the latest Verizon TV commercial launched in the US to promote the Motorola Droid, a vertiable Valuev of smartphone, if this ad is anything to go by.

In other words real men don't buy iPhones. And they wouldn't be seen dead at a prizefight clutching a Palm Pre.

The Verizon advert is nothing new in US advertising; it's very much in the style of TV commercials for truck and SUV commercials, but marks a first for the smartphone market, which so far has stayed clear of such gender politics.

Rumours that the Droid will be launched in UK using the Village People's classic chart topper, Macho Man, as a soundtrack, are yet to be confirmed.

Full transcript of the Verizon advert:

A robot is a thing that does.
Need a rock crushed? It does that.
Need a hole punched through a steel wall?
It does that, too.
So instead of a smartphone, we made a robot phone.
A phone that does!
It does have a giant screen.
It does run thousands of Android apps with axle-greased ease!
It does swap semi-functional giggling brat vanity
For a bare-knuckle bucket of does!
