Acer to release Android mobile devices

Richard Goodwin

Acer, one of the world’s leading laptop and netbook manufacturers, has confirmed that it is going to release a batch of Android-based mobile devices in 2010.

Acer released 10 mobile phones in 2009, one of which, the Acer A1 was based on Google’s Android platform, the rest used Windows based OSs.

According to Reuters, Aymar de Lencquesaing, Acer's senior corporate VP and smart handheld president, has confirmed that 2010 will see a more balanced spread between the two mobile platforms.

This is apparently down to the Android platform gaining significant momentum throughout 2009, which Acer did not anticipate.

Reports have suggested that Acer will be releasing one Android phone every two to three months in 2010, with a yearly target of 8 to 10 devices, depending on market conditions.

Obviously, there are some links between Android for mobile and Android for netbooks, something which Acer have also confirmed they are looking into.

According to ITProPortal, Acer said back in June 2009 that it believes "the Android operating system will contribute significantly to the worldwide netbook market growth".

So, 2010 looks like we’ll be seeing a lot of Acer-Android products, both in a netbook and mobile format.
