Richard Goodwin
O2 has confirmed that its mobile data network has been put under considerable strain by the amount of data-heavy apps running on devices like the iPhone and Blackberry.
According to reports, O2 has confirmed that it has been unable to cope with the shear volume of devices using web based app services on its network, which has resulted in the network’s mobile data services suffering since the summer.
O2 CEO Ronan Dunne spoke to Reuters and confirmed that the O2 network had been preforming disappointing since the summer and that it resulted largely from the increase of web-based apps on devices like the iPhone and Blackberry.
Dunne added that telco was working with Apple, RIM, and other handset manufacturers to ascertain which apps in particular were causing the most problems for the network.
In light of this issue, O2 has increased its network capacity considerably in recent months.
