Vodafone first to carry Google's Nexus One in the UK
Paul Nesbitt
Vodafone will be the first network to carry Google's Nexus One in the UK, although T-Mobile and 3 are also in talks with Google about carrying the Android handset.
Vodafone has yet to release details as to whether it will subsidise the Nexus One, or when it will launch the smartphone in the UK. However, T-Mobile subsidises the Nexus One in the US, which costs $529 with no subsidy. Industry sources predicted that Vodafone may settle on 15 February for the UK launch of the Nexus One, so that it has some news for the GSM Mobile Conference held in Barcelona, which starts on the same day.
Google denied reports that it will release a version of the Nexus One for Europe, which will include support for multitouch.
Meanwhile anyone can buy a SIM-free Nexus One direct from Google's website.
'It's a great internet phone and we expect plenty of people to import it to the UK. Our £15 SIMs are ready and waiting,' said 3's head of internet services, David Kerrigan. 3 also confirmed that it is in talks with Google to carry the Nexus One in the UK.
'We are in talks with Google and hope to have something to announce soon,' a T-Mobile UK spokesperson commented when asked about the Nexus One.
O2, the UK network, which has made a splash by supporting high profile handsets including Apple's iPhone and Palm's Pre, said that it had 'no current announcement to make about supporting the Google Nexus One.' But O2 added that it 'will continue to review and refresh our product range to ensure we meet the demands of our customers.'
Orange has made no announcement that it will carry the Nexus One in the UK, but it issued a statement which said that it is 'always looking to bring the best devices to its customers.'
