Unbreakable mobile phone is smashed at CES 2010
Paul Nesbitt
BBC reporter Dan Simmons broke a Sonim mobile phone, touted as 'unbreakable' in front of BBC cameras and Sonim's CEO, Bob Plaschke at the Consumer Electronics Show, held in Las Vegas.
During an interview Simmons was challenged by Plaschke to break the company's latest mobile phone, the Sonim XP1.
Sonim claims it is 'the maker of the world's toughest phone' and the company's slogan 'built for life' is backed up by a '3-year unconditional guarantee.'
Plaschke told Simmons on camera that you can drop the Sonim CP1 from a 10 storey building, submerge it under 20 feet of water for up to half an hour, and the phone will continue to work.
On camera, Plaschke said to Simmons: 'If you find a way to break it, we're going to give you a free phone.'
Simmons then dunked the phone in a fish tank at the Sonim stand and the phone continued to work. However after Simmons smashed the Sonim XP1 three times on the corner of the fish tank, the XP1's screen cracked and the phone broke.
Simmons apologised, while a bemused Plaschke responded: 'You've actually broken the phone. That's impressive. That's absolutely impressive.'
