Nokia posts plans for Symbian^4 touch screen interface
Paul Nesbitt
Nokia has posted a guide for what it wants to see adopted as the new user interface in Symbian^4, which is due to appear on smartphones early 2011.
Symbian, most widely used by Nokia, has fallen behind smartphone OSes like iPhone OS, Android and the BlackBerry's OS, which are driven by touch-based displays.
In Nokia's S^4 Interface Concept Proposal, Nokia proposes that Symbian phones display four main screens for music, photos, applications and contacts, and it posted some sample examples.
Other proposals include a similar look and feel for all Symbian applications, the ability to customise the home screen by placing shortcuts to access applications, and context-based menus.
