Maemo 5 OS first to get Firefox
Richard Goodwin
The Nokia N900 is the first smartphone to get the web’s most popular browser, Mozilla Firefox.
Mozilla, the creators of the web browser Firefox, have announced that the Maemo 5 platform will be the first mobile OS to get the mobile version of its browser.
The mobile version of Mozilla Firefox is called Weave Sync and will first be available on the Maemo 5 platform before being released on other OSs, such as Android and Symbian.
Weave Sync, which is available to download now, will allow users to sync their mobile and desktop browsers so they’ll be able to pull bookmarks, tabs, history and their passwords from one to the other.
Early reviews of the mobile browser have been rather complimentary, but Engadget have gone on record as saying the Flash support is still somewhat shaky and does not come enabled by default.
However, like the desktop-based browser, Mozilla is always releasing updates and bug-fixes for its mobile browser, so any early glitches and problems will be ironed out shortly.
All in all, Weave Sync looks like it is set to become a very popular browser once it makes the jump to other OSs.
