Nexus One finally gets multi-touch gestures

Google has finally released an over-the-air update for the Nexus One that gives users’ the highly coveted multi-touch gesturing function - just like on the iPhone.

Google’s Nexus One, which has yet to land in the UK, has received mixed reviews since its January launch in the US. The majority of the criticism was largely aimed at the fact that it didn’t have multi-gesture touch capabilities.

Nevertheless, Google has confirmed that it is releasing an over-the-air upgrade that will finally bring multi-touch gesturing to the Nexus One.

The over-the-air upgrade will also feature some minor bug fixes and some additional software improvements.

According to reports, the Nexus One will be launching in the UK on Vodafone in the spring.

"This update provides some great new features, and fixes a few problems that some users might have experienced," said Google's mobile team in a blog post.

The upgrade has also brought some much needed improvements to the Nexus One’s 3G connectivity, a “night mode” for the Google Maps Navigation satnav, and the ability to synchronise Favourite Places plotted on Google Maps between a computer and the Nexus One.

In addition to this, Nexus One users’ can now natively run Google Goggles - a visual search augmented reality application.

“In order to access the update, you will receive a message on your phone's notification bar,” said the Google mobile team.

They added: “Just download the update, wait for it to install, and you should be all set. This update will be rolled out gradually to phones – and most users might not receive the notification until the end of the week.”

Unfortunately, Google has remained annoyingly tip-lipped about the possibility of whether multi-touch support will be coming to other Android devices.
