Motorola announces the world's first combined smartphone and walkie-talkie

Paul Nesbitt

Motorola used the CTIA trade show in Las Vegas to launch the Motorola i1, an Android smartphone, which also includes built-in push-to-talk functionality, which enables it to be used like a walkie-talkie.

Push to Talk is a service option for mobile phones which enables customers to use their phone like a walkie-talkie. One advantage of this service is that with a single push of a button, the user can immediately reach a predetermined person or group with a single push of a button, rather than having to dial a number.

The Motorola i1 comes with a 3.1in touch screen, built-in WiFi, a 5 megapixel camera and the Opera Mini 5 browser preloaded.

Designed for people who use their smartphone in the field, the Motorola i1 is ruggedised to 'military standards' so that it can 'withstand some of the harshest environments.

Motorola and Sprint said that the i1 will ship in the US this summer, but they have not yet announced availability in the UK.
