HTC promises Windows Phone 7 smartphone before end of 2010

HTC may be best known for its selection of Android handsets, but HTC recently reaffirmed its commitment to Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 smartphone OS.

In an interview with Forbes magazine conducted during the CTIA Wireless trade show, HTC CEO Peter Chou was enthusiastic about Microsoft's development of Windows Phone 7: 'They're putting in a tremendous effort to make Windows Phone 7 very appealing and effective,' he said.

Chou's enthusiasm for Windows Phone 7 is also likely influenced by the company's problems with Google's Android OS. HTC was recently sued by Apple for patent infringement in a move, which most industry insiders said was a move by Apple against Android, rather than HTC in particular.

HTC has been a high profile champion of Google's Android – HTC even made Google's own Nexus smartphone.

However, most industry analysts believe that the Nexus One has not lived up to expectations in terms of sales or customer experience. Market s researchers estimate the Nexus One has sold as few as 150,000 units, compared to multimillion unit sales of the iPhone and rival Android handsets like the Motorola Droid during the same time period.

Chou defended the Nexus One: 'Google's goal with the Nexus One was to really show good Android can be. In that regard, I think it has been an achievement. Considering Google didn't do retail or marketing for it, the Nexus One is doing pretty well,' he said.
