Guide: The top 5 games for Android

Richard Goodwin

Android is one of the fastest growing mobile OSs in the world - by 2013, it will be the second biggest in the world next to Symbian. And with the Android Market expanding every single day, we decided it was high-time to have a look at the best games currently available on Android.

As we all know, Apple is leading the way with what is possible with mobile gaming on its iPhone and iPod devices. However, this doesn’t mean that every other OS is redundant though. There are literally thousands of games on the Android Market that will keep you engaged for hours on end. Fortunately, we’ve compiled a list of the top 5 currently available, to save you the hassle of hours trial-and-error.

PAC-MAN

Everybody loves PAC-MAN, thank god it’s finally arrived on Android. The game itself is exactly the same as the classic arcade version, so the purists will be happy. However, PAC-MAN on Android features three quirky control options: touchscreen, trackball and accelerometer. The game is addictive as ever, and for this reason, is a necessity for every Android user

Throttle-Copter

This game is so simple, it’s brilliant. The game’s premise is this: fly your helicopter for as long as possible through a never ending tunnel of obstacles using the trackball as a throttle. Sound boring? Well, it really isn’t. Sure, it’s not much to look at - at all. But the overall game play is so addictive, and hard, that you’ll keep coming back for more. Our personal best was 46,678, which could potentially be a world record - if you can beat that, we take our hats off to you, as it was the result of many infuriating hours of work.

Bonsai Blast

Bonsai Blast takes puzzle gaming to new levels on Android. The game itself features 90 levels of brian-teasing bliss. Control wise, you use the touchscreen interface, which is smooth and extremely tactile. This game is highly addictive and well designed, we’d recommend it to anyone with a penchant for puzzle-solving.

Softrace

This one is strictly for fitness buffs or the highly competitive. Softrace allows users to race anyone, anywhere in the world by setting a course on Google Maps and then going for it - head-to-head style. This game, or interactive sports application, allows people to form relationships, make working out more fun, and potentially beat the pants of over weight Americans - and all with without actually taking to them, what more could you want!?

Midnight Pool 2

Midnight Pool 2 is a serious bit of gaming action for your Android device, it includes awesome game play, brilliantly intuitive controls and some of the crispest graphics we’ve seen on an Android game to date. In the game you get to play in eight bars against eleven interesting, and extremely stereotypical American, characters, which really separates the men from the Eddie Falcons’.
