Alcohol sure does make us do the stupidest things. While a select band of people are able to consume copious amounts of liquor and not run into any mischief, the vast majority of the world’s population transform into complete and utter imbeciles once they’ve had a few too many sniffs of the barmaid’s apron.

Thank God for DrunkBlocker, an Android application aimed at those of us who happen to enjoy a chaotic relationship with booze.

The developers of this ingenious program have quite rightly surmised that mobile phones and intoxicated people are a dangerous combination; it’s usually when you’ve had a few too many that phoning random strangers seems like a good idea, which of course it isn’t.

Sometimes these calls can have serious ramifications on your life – should you decide in your drunken stupor to make contact with a long-lost love then it can only end in embarrassment when he or she returns the call the next day, when you happen to be nursing a hellish hangover and can’t recall a single word you said the previous night.

If you’re currently grimacing at this scenario then you should really download DrunkBlocker as soon as possible. It’s a fairly straightforward application; on the most basic level it prevents you from making calls during particular parts of the day – basically the times you’re likely to be off your trolley.

You can decide when DrunkBlocker activates itself and you can even pick which numbers you’d like it to prevent you from calling. The safest option is naturally to block all contacts in your address book but you might want to leave some open - such as the number of a decent taxi firm – unless you fancy being stranded when it comes to chucking-out time.

Of course not everyone becomes paralytic on a night out and if you find that you’re pretty sober after a night’s revelry then you’ll be happy to know that DrunkBlocker has a handy override system. If you can successful pass a random sobriety test you can disable the app and make your call.

DrunkBlocker is one of those apps that makes you wish you’d thought of the idea; it’s simple yet incredibly effective. If we were to find fault then we could say that the interface is a little barren, but then a program like this really doesn’t need flash visuals to get the job done.

If you’re something of a party animal and have left a trail of broken relationships in your wake thanks to your late-night, drink-fuelled telephone conversations then we advise you either cut out the decadent boozing or download DrunkBuster right away. It won’t save your liver from alcohol-induced failure but it will prevent you from looking like a complete fool the morning after a big night on the tiles.
