Guns may be far more common than geraniums in games, but that doesn't mean that they can't be relaxing without straying too far from what gamers will recognise as home turf. Glyder uses an otherworldly landscape as its backyard, coaxing the everyday joystick-wielder in with its fantasy tropes, even though at heart it's as peaceful as a daisy blowing in the wind.

Your play as the winged Eryn, caught in Glyder's strange world after having accidentally flown through a dimensional rift. To get back to your own world, you'll have to collect the crystals spread throughout the game's environments.

As Eryn, you float about the skies freely using the accelerometer. Unlike more realistic hang-gliding sims - those rare things - Glyder doesn't penalise you for meandering about. Although you won't be able to regain altitude if you constantly dive to gain speed, there are enough speed boost pick-ups to keep you afloat without making a concerted effort to do so.

Match this with the soothing piano music that plays in the background and you've got a truly soothing game. Sure, if you crash into a wall your wings will crumple, but you'll re-spawn at a nearby save point without really having lost anything.

That's not to say that the game isn't frequently challenging. All  six of Glyder's areas, from the mushroom island to the floating castle of the Lost Kingdom, feature crystals that are placed in hard-to-reach nooks and crannies. Reaching them requires some pretty skilled iPhone-swinging.

It's a game that's very keen on positive reinforcement though. The areas open up one-by-one as you collect more of the hidden crystals, making you feel almost as if you've had a hand in construction the environment yourself. Other than collecting the crystals, there's also along list of additional achievements to complete, including flights from one place to another and awards for long dives and reaching certain altitudes.

Although Glyder doesn't push any of this on you, the game's world is such a delightful place to hang around in that completing them soon becomes a minor compulsion. Even after trying repeatedly to complete a tough one, you never leave the game feeling anything less than completely relaxed. Eryn's sweeping movements and the game's tranquil sensibility make playing it not unlike a sort of meditation. Doctors should start prescribing it to stressed-out commuters.

Actually collecting all the crystals will only take an hour or so, but there's a similarly-large chunk of game time to be enjoyed by indulging in the game's lengthy achievement list. A relatively low-priced game, we still think that it's nothing less than a bargain.

Glyer's quite unlike just about any other game we've seen from a large publisher, but it's likely to induce a marmite effect. You'll either love its chilled-out vibe or wonder what all the fuss is about. We're fully signed-up members of its fan club though, and urge you to give it a try.
