Numerology review

Richard Goodwin

We review Numerology, the app that brings ancient mysticism to your iPhone

Rating:

Verdict: The occult makes a thoroughly entertaining debut on the iPhone and is sure to give boring horoscopes a serious run their money

Platform: iPhone and iPod Touch

Pros: Fun, easy to use, and a refreshing change from horoscopes, plus you can check your compatibility with people by adding them to your contacts list

Cons: It’s probably not going to predict anything that comes true, Richard Dawkins won’t be very happy, and you have to pay money for the addition of the compatibility function, which if we’re honest, isn’t really worth it.

Before materialist science there was alchemy, gnosticism and mysticism. Their purpose was to derive meaning from the seemingly chaotic world in which they were conceived. Many of these traditions, including Numerology, have survived - much to the dismay of Richard Dawkins - to the present day.

Some, in this case Numerology, have made their way onto the iPhone. Numerology claims to be able to make predictions about your career, destiny, love affairs, and Karmic lessons - but how well does this ancient tradition translate over into the digital age?

The best way to think about this application is that it’s like a magical phone book on your iPhone - although, magic isn’t free, so you will have to fork out for it, unfortunately.

As we said, the application itself, once open looks very much like a phone directory, in fact, it’s almost exactly the same as the one built into your iPhone. From here you can add your friends, family, and loved ones - you could probably even do your pets, although we didn’t bother.

Seeing into the future

Numerology uses numbers that correspond to the letters in your name to make predictions about your future, who you really are, and where you life may be heading.

During testing we started by entering just a single name and birthday. After we’d done this we found that we could find out the following: What that name meant in terms of Motivation, Inner self, Expression, Karmic Lessons, Hidden Tendencies, and Subconscious Response. It then went on to explain what that persons birth date said about them and also gave daily, monthly and yearly forecasts.

The app itself is very detailed in its predictions and it would certainly take more than this review to go through them all. However, it is a very well put together application and is certainly fun to use, even if you don’t believe in any of it.

That said, at times we did find it a little subjective and vague in its predictions, I mean we weren’t expecting magic, but using the same prediction for two people can hardly be considered prophecy - although, this doesn’t seem to hinder Russell Grant’s popularity, so we probably shouldn’t be too harsh about it.

Human compatibility

However, where the application really comes into its own, and actually becomes quite fun, is that you can check your compatibility with other people you have stored in the apps ‘magical phonebook.’ During testing we found that we had a lot in common with certain people, and hardly any with some of our closest friends, which was a little scary - good job it's all hocus pocus, right!

While this application might not be perfect, it’s certainly a lot of fun and has enough features to keep you entertained for some time - whether you’d pay for such an app is entirely down to the individual, but we would strongly recommend this to anyone who has the remotest interest in the Occult.
